Don't let fear lead to oppression - politics

We react to tragedies like the Boston Marathon bombing by putting on a brave face. We cheer our President when he says: "...the spirit of this city is undaunted and the spirit of the country shall remain undimmed." But these words ring hollow in my ears. Undaunted? Undimmed? These are platitudes. If we were undaunted and undimmed would we allow our government to seize our freedoms in the name of public safety? Why did we cheer as a domestic army of police, SWAT, FBI and military in full combat gear, supported by armored vehicles and helicopters, swarmed over Boston? Why did we nod our heads in approval as the governor shut down the city and declared de facto martial law? Why did we allow the police to intimidate their way into our homes to conduct needless searches? The people of Boston took to the streets cheering and singing our national anthem when the second suspect was captured, because they believed martial law had saved them. Two crazy madmen. Two. And we allowed our government to shut down an entire city. Our government's response to the bombing put on display the strength and speed with which a police state can be imposed upon us. When Rand Paul stood up in the Senate and demanded the President state the obvious, that it is not legal to kill an American with a drone aircraft on American soil, and the president petulantly refused, Rand, not the president, was called an extremist. Is it not extreme to suspend the rights of 600,000 citizens during a search for two people? Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ever since that horrific September day, we've done nothing but give up essential liberty. We've allowed our president to rule outside of Article 2 of our Constitution. Through executive orders and his illegal "czars," he has established his own government and circumvented the will of Congress. We've allowed our government to create a vast new security apparatus through the Patriot Act and the Department of Homeland security, while simultaneously using gun control to render us unable to defend against the apparatus. It is the intent of our enemies to destroy our country, not by bombing us out of existence, but by sowing the seeds of fear. Through fear they have been able to do what the British, Nazis and Soviets never could: Take away our freedoms. Without our freedoms, we are defeated. I support our police. They have a difficult, often thankless job, and we should all be grateful to them. It is when the police are militarized and used as a tool by government to oppress us, that we need to voice our objection. We can no longer afford to silently acquiesce to an increasingly aggressive government. We must demand that our government obey the law and respect our rights. We need to say "no, you may not search my home."

I'm proud to be a p***ert. I'm amazed at some of my friends and the illegal things they say on the phone. I've been telling them for years they need to watch what they say. I bet they all freaked out when the NSA thing came out.
Curlyrocks - January 28, 2014, 9:54 am
I agree with you that the phone or E-mail is already too easy to hack for people with a secret. But I wasn't so open about being a disgusting p***ert I would say the government has no right to know what me and other consenting adults do.

Last of the great satirists. Jon Stewart who?
StoneTools - June 9, 2013, 1:40 pm
so, is it safe to a**ume that you feel the same about the liberals getting non profit status, for instance, the OFA (which is blatantly pro obama) and was already approved with minimum paperwork while right leaners were penalized for not being liberals?
Renza - June 9, 2013, 10:30 am
I thought they upgraded from a wall to a hologram?
Cannabal - June 8, 2013, 11:44 pm
The whole point of tax exemption meant no direct influence in politics at all. Sadly, the wall of church and state has as many holes in it as a US immigration policy.
Rudedog - June 8, 2013, 6:45 pm
No one is claiming George Carlin for their own, just those willing to accept logical, unbiased resolve of that which demands resolution.
Renza - June 8, 2013, 1:47 pm
Is that why you're constantly talking about lefties and Obama followers?
StoneTools - June 8, 2013, 11:04 am
You have issues, don't you? Just because 1 or 2 people do something, why does that define a whole group?
BobbEdwards - June 8, 2013, 9:37 am
That was a quick 1L ;-) What's the matter, it's George Carlin! You know, the guy that right-wingers here are trying to claim for their side. I guess they don't want that ridiculous notion spoiled for them...
